Four weeks of courses, open classes and concerts for all ages and abilities. Participants choose up to four courses a day for a tailor-made week-long residential package. Individual Courses are available to those in the local area. Over 150 participants attend each week from many different countries, giving the Summer School truly international feel. Bursaries are available and awarded for participation in our Advanced courses to help young, aspiring performers become the professional musicians of tomorrow.
A Music School by Day…
Dartington International Summer School is all about being creative during the day, when we run week-long courses, workshops and masterclasses where tomorrow’s young musical stars listen, learn, participate, and socialise with music-lovers of all ages and backgrounds. The range of music spans classical, jazz, world music, and folk, as well as dance, multimedia, and creative writing. The Summer School brings together an extraordinary mix of people, from professional and non-professional musicians to emerging artists, writers, and poets who choose to participate in, or just observe, the huge variety of teaching and learning opportunities available in the beautiful surroundings of the historic Dartington estate.
A Concert Hall by Night…
Throughout August, there’s a packed programme of events open to everyone as, in the early evening, Dartington transforms into a concert hall: we throw open the doors of the magnificent medieval Great Hall, and present concerts of all kinds of music, for everyone. From opera, jazz, string quartets, solo recitals, music theatre, poetry, to illustrated lectures, Brazilian rhythms, gospel, film music and choral music, there’s a vibrant sequence of live music and events, and a really festive atmosphere. There are up to three concerts each night; you can enjoy world-class performances by world-famous musicians, in the beautiful setting of Dartington’s wonderful grounds.
